The State of Tennessee Will Review Social Studies Standards Yet Again

B. Fielding Rolston
Chair, Tennessee State Board of Education

Mr. Rolston wrote an article for The Tennessean, the Nashville morning paper, about our state standards. According to Mr. Rolston, there has been such a statewide uproar over our standards, that they must revisit them again. Please click the following link and read the article for class discussion, and encourage your parents to read the article, as well.

  1. Thought it was interesting how they will revisit the standard. And how much thought and work goes into making the standards.

    2. I agree with Sam Bbrumbaugh because the standards were receintly changed and that change affected our learning in social studies and several other classes.

  3. Grant Baxter- I am surprised to know that The States Board of Education is making such a great deal out of this. I thought that The board had on common goal- for us to learn.

  4. Olivia Hankins- I find it interesting that the board focuses so much on the revisions of the Social Studies curriculum. There are other subjects begging for improvement, too.

  5. Sarah Haggitt- I find it interesting that it is always a local decision how long a particular topic is covered in the classroom and the textbooks and curriculum employed. I had always thought that teachers just covered a topic as long as they wanted.

  6. I think it is very interesting how a lesson could be taught for as long as needed, and can be taught in any way.

  7. Nanditha Ramesh- It is interesting to know that Social Studies has once yet made a huge impact on the curriculum standards.

  8. I found it interesting on how Social Studies standards have caused a huge impact on state standards. I never knew how much it was stressed by the officials. I never knew that Islam was one of the units state officials tended to more. In my opinion, I think other units also need to be attended to because sometimes I feel they either cover to much or too little throughout the unit.

    1. I'd like to agree with Medha but would also add to what Medha said, in the new book there is a big chapter on Christianity and we don't even go through it.

  13. I think that it is important to learn about different cultures and religion so that we know what is going on in the world. I don't understand why it is such a big deal for us to learn about different religions.

  16. I remember talking about this in class. I find it odd that people would come to the conclusion that the schools are trying to push different religions on us. In my opinion, the way we are taught is in no way persuasive, it's just educational. Learning about different religions is probably a good thing since our school and country are so diverse.

  21. I like how the article actually answered questions that may have concerned many 7th grade students and their parents and was mostly a clarification on what was happening. Also, it goes very in depth about how the social studies curriculum have to be both "rigorous and strong".

    1. I agree, and I think that people are putting too much streatch on resisting world religions, but even if you are heavily Christian, you shouldn't be protesting against learning the HISTORY of that religion. Plus, you have to learn about waht the other religions believe in order to spread your religion.

  23. Bereket Birbo - I understand that the board is trying to make improvements to our education, but I don't understand why parents are worried about their children learning about other religions. We are only taught important facts that help us understand the world around us. We are not taught these religions to be converted, so there really is not a reason for parents to worry about their children learning these religions. I found this article very informative about the social studies curriculum and I liked it.

  24. I agree with Bereket but would like to add on.I think we need to learn about all cultures because for example if we end up in a different country, it will be mandatory that we understand their culture and tradition so we can fit in. In addition to that learning about the cultures can help us compare and contrast our cultures and theirs.

  27. I mostly agree with everybody as this article is informative and additionally provides a great deal of interest to me as I never knew that this and other small issues are discombobulating enough for even higher school board authorities to bring it to the state level. I also agree that this situation shouldn't be a major issue as no person should worry that the curriculum taught about any unequivocal religion will affect their beliefs and customs. - Aryan Rajesh

  28. The article was a very informative article. I agree that all religions should be taught in schools ,but they should not make you do things that your religion says not to do.

  29. I think that this article was very good. This is so because The States Board Of Education says that even though many people might not like what students might be learning, it is crucial that they do learn the material. Students should learn the material to learn more about the people around them, and the history of the most important religions.

  32. I personally believe that students should learn about a variety of religions so that they will have a better understanding of other people's culture and beliefs. I found the article to be a good source of information for the issue at hand, and I now know that the amount of time 7th graders are studying Islam is not nessecarily decided by the State Board of Education.

  33. This comment is very late, but I believe that although learning about other religions is very important when it comes to learning about other cultures and customs, but I also am wondering why it was necessary to skip an entire chapter in the book.I believe that Christian civilization is one of the four pillars that our country is supported by, the others being, Judaism, The Romans and the Greeks. I'm not saying that other societies did not effect us as well, but those four our what made the United States the country that it is today, and we would be entirely different if one of these societies never existed.I just don't agree with it, but I can see their reasons for this decision. Please, this is just my opinion so please don't be angry with me.

  35. personally believe that parents should not be concerned about their children learning new customs and religions. If students take more time to learn about this topic, they will have a better understanding about the people who follow this religion and practice it, because it will help them (students) when they get older and they meet people who are a different religion. Once they meet the people, they will know about how they practice their religion, and wont feel uncomfortable about learning.

  36. I would like to agree with Madison Centobene and say that it is fine for us to learn about different culture because it helps us understand the cultures better and understand why others react certain ways because of there religion and or the circumstances they have to follow.. -- Elijah Raffel

  37. I did not know that social studies standards had such a huge effect on state standards, and that studying different religions was even a topic of stress. I do feel as if all religions should be taught in school, because they are key parts of the history of most civilizations, and learning about what they believed in also helps to better understand the civilization in general. On a different note, I do look forward to improvement on the curriculum. - Kyle Mesler

  40. I would like to agree with Elijah Raffel and Madison Centobene. I think that it's important for us to learn about different cultures, because people of all kinds of cultures surround us. I think it's important that we learn about different cultures so that when we meet people of different cultures (now or in the future), we can understand how/what they believe in. However, I also think that it's important to include many cultures in our learning curriculum instead of focusing on one culture for a really long period of time, being Islam. -Savanah Thompson 6th period

  42. I agree with Catherine. I mean why not learn about everyone's cultures. There's nothing wrong about being informed about other people's way of living. We should learn about every single different culture, though. I also agree with Sam because I guess all you have to do is put the beliefs of other religions in quotes if you just really don't wanna say it, and we're not practicing the religions so there's really not a huge problem. -Kyndle Lee

As long as we understand that we are not being told to follow this religion, just understand what they believed.
